In this review, we focus on the history of cancer driver genes identification from the beginning of cancer research through the advent of cancer genomics and into the future. We present a systematic approach (implemented in the IntOGen pipeline) to obtain the compendium of mutational cancer drivers. We applied the pipeline to data from 28,076 samples grouped in 221 publicly available cohorts covering 66 cancer types. We present and discuss the snapshot of the compendium of mutational drivers produced with the analysis of this data.
